Cai Guo-Qiang at the Seattle Art Museum

I’ve been on vacation for the past 5 days now. I went to Portland, Oregon to visit my sister. My family and I’ve traveled a bit north. Now in Seattle for vacation. I’ll be back next wednesday. By the way I didn’t photograph the above photo. I saw found it on google images. Source is preview-art.com. Anyways, I’m pretty geeked about Cai Guo-Qiang. I’ve been raving about his work since i’ve seen him in the Art 21 series on PBS. Art 21 is a bi-annual art news show featuring 21st century artists. It’s very informative. It started in 2004 i think?
Anyways, I saw his work today in person at the Seattle Art Museum (SAM). SAM as the locals call it. Its a very plan looking building but you’d think there wouldn’t be housing art in that particular building. I’d say i’m pretty impressed by the installation at Seattle Art Museum (SAM).
This particular installation is a series of 9-10 cars leaping in midair with wires coming out of it. I forgot the exact meaning of it. But a lot of his work are consist of a theam of referencing another source as I remember from some readings. I may be wrong because another series of his sculpture and work was about the beauty of organic destruction. I was very tempted to take a picture in the lobby but I was worried the guards would scold me. I guess i didn’t feel like much of a risk taker.
At SAM i also learned a lot about Western influenced Japanese Art and a painter Gaylen Hansen.
The lecturer on Gaylen Hansen explained his motives and inspired me to see the world from his view. I totally loved a lot of his work! It’s very adorable and directed in a light and sometimes humorous manner. My favorite painting is called conflict i think? It’s one of his paintings from the 80s. It features life size crickets attacking cars. It features a homage to a traditional theme in art with the battle between man and nature.
If you’re ever in Seattle you must check out SAM (the Seattle Art Museum). It only cost $15 for adults and you can spend 2-6 hours there depending on your pace that you desire to go at. If you go on the first Thursday of the month they’re also offered at a discounted rate.
They even feature very tasty gourmet meals in the basement. They named their restaurant the Art Ladder. The Seattle Art Museum is located at at the corner of 1st and University avenue. You can’t miss it if you’re near the Pike Fish Market. It’s just a bit south from there.
